GUEST SPEAKER! – Sean Swaby – ADHD, Substance Use & Addiction

15 January @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm MST
Virtual Event

ADHD, Substance Use & Addiction

ADHD and Addiction are like Thelma and Louise, Bart and Homer, or Thor and Loki. They spend a lot of time together, but they don’t make good roommates because addiction likes to take over.

About The Event

Studies estimate that 20–40% of adults with ADHD will struggle with a substance
use disorder at some point. Addictions can come in many forms, like substance use, gambling, gaming, and sex. In this presentation we will discuss why addictions to drugs, alcohol and certain behaviors are so common in people with ADHD. We will talk about what makes change difficult and how people with ADHD have found ways to face, overcome, and even befriend their addictions.

Both ADHD and addiction can have profound impacts our emotions and our relationships. This presentation will also talk about what you can do if someone
you care about is struggling.

Disclosure: This session will not tell you can do to fix or “cure” addiction. It will
not give you strategies that work for every person, every time. It will talk about
ADHD and addiction with respect, hope, and with dignity.
And it will be interactive, imperfect and even a little bit fun!

About our speaker:

Sean Swaby is a Canadian Certified Counsellor, Counselling Supervisor, and Addiction Therapist. In his practice, he works with youth, individuals, and families who are navigating substance use, addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health challenges. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at City University in Edmonton, where he teaches the Psychology of Addictions.

Sean brings creativity into his counselling and supervision by drawing on pop
culture, superheroes, and other ‘geeky’ themes that make it more engaging and
relatable.

Outside of his professional life, Sean enjoys photography, time with his family,
and anything with superheroes, zombies, or aliens. He also volunteers with an Edmonton-based cosplay group, suiting up as characters like Batman, Daredevil,
Captain America, and Blade to bring some fun and inspiration to local children’s
charity events.

Diagnosed with ADHD about ten years ago, Sean is actively involved as a
facilitator with the Adult ADHD group.

*Tickets are free on Eventbrite here; however, we gratefully accept donations from those who are able to help. Every donation goes towards helping individuals affected by ADHD. If you would like to donate there is an option to do so on the ticket page.
