SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! – Amanda Montey – Unmasking: Embracing\, ADHD\, Autism\, and Queerness
DESCRIPTION:Local Psychologist Amanda Montey will guide you in exploring masking and unmasking in this experiential discussion. – Presented along the AuDHD Support Group Meeting. \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Amanda invites you to join in on a discussion of the ways that ADHD\, autism\, and queerness contribute to experiences with masking\, and therefore\, unmasking. Amanda will discuss the ways that masking arises\, and how this informs the ways that we approach unmasking. Special attention will be paid to the ways that gender and sexuality interact with the AuDHD mask\, and this interacts with the unmasking journey. Additionally\, consideration will be paid to the role that intersectionality like race\, religion\, socioeconomic status\, and more plays in unmasking.Opportunities for self-reflection will be provided throughout\, and participants are encouraged to bring things to write and/or draw with if they would like to engage with these prompts in full.To support participants in beginning or continuing their own unmasking journeys\, Amanda will provide information on community resources\, literature\, and more. Discussion and sharing is encouraged throughout as contributes to a more rich learning experience for everyone! \n\n\n\n\nAmanda Montey (they/them) is a Registered Psychologist who works with kids\, teens\, and adults who have\, or suspect they have ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Within these populations\, Amanda works extensively with folks from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community\, often helping clients to navigate the unique circumstances presented by the ways that sexuality\, gender identity\, and neurotype can interact. Outside of work\, Amanda enjoys spending time with their spouse and their cats\, playing video games\, crocheting\, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends. Amanda is ADHD\, Autistic\, non-binary\, and queer\, and they believe in drawing from their lived experience in combination with the available research\, best practices\, and experiences of community members to help folks meaningfully understand how best to accommodate their unique needs. \n\nSpecial Guest: Ian Brown (they/them) is a queer and trans neurodivergent human living in Edmonton. Their background is in social services and high-risk youth work. They have been doing community education work on queer and trans issues and doing community resource building for over a decade. Over the past few years\, they have been working to understand and accept their autism\, and in the past year have been working on recovering from autistic burnout caused by high-risk youth work. \nFree event! Check the page and if you wish\, register on Eventbrite as it help us to know attendees numbers in advance.

SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! - What is a Learning Disability?
DESCRIPTION:What is a Learning Disability?\nYou will learn what a learning disability (LD) is\, how LD are diagnosed\, and how parents can advocate for accommodations and interventions. \nDo you have a child affected by learning disabilities? Are you curious about the assessment process and the different ways you can advocate for your child?\nParents of children with learning disabilities can support and advocate for their children more successfully when they have a solid understanding of what learning disabilities are and how they impact their child’s functioning in and out of school. There is no single definition of a learning disability and there are several terms that are used to describe these learning differences. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Event \nIn this lecture Michele will go over: \n·Different types of learning disabilities and how they differ from other developmental disabilities. \n· How learning disabilities are diagnosed. \n· The kinds of information typically included in psychoeducational assessments. \n·The difference between interventions\, modifications\, and accommodations for students with learning disabilities. \n\nAbout our speaker: \nMichele Pentyliuk\, M. Ed.\, is a Registered Psychologist and Certified Teacher working in private practice in Edmonton as a clinician and the managing partner of North Land Counselling Group. The focus of her practice is on identification of – and interventions for – individuals who encounter challenges within educational environments. Early intervention regarding literacy learning is a particular interest. Michele has presented workshops to parents\, professionals\, and students throughout Canada on a wide range of topics related to learning and learning differences. She has provided strategy instruction to individuals\, small groups\, and large audiences at all educational levels. As a volunteer with the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta\, she was part of the team that developed the Reading Readiness Screening Tool and the Right to Read intervention program. Michele has also developed various learning tools and apps including Alberta’s Learner’s Licence Prep Kit. \n\n*Tickets are free on Eventbrite here; however\, we gratefully accept donations from those who are able to help. Every donation goes towards helping individuals affected by ADHD. If you would like to donate there is an option to do so on the ticket page.

DESCRIPTION:Navigating Post-Secondary Support for Students with ADHD\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin us in learning about the supports available in college or university for people affected by ADHD. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you a university or college student affected by ADHD? Are you curious about what supports are available for individuals affected by ADHD in the post-secondary system? \nJoin us as we learn from Deanna about how to navigate post-secondary supports and what steps we need to take to utilize these supports.\nAbout Our Speaker: \nDeanna (B.Ed\, M.Ed) is a former K-12 educator\, inclusive education coordinator and school leader. Deanna currently works in post-secondary education in the fields of accessibility and educational psychology.
