SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! - Sean Swaby - ADHD\, Substance Use & Addiction
DESCRIPTION:ADHD\, Substance Use & Addiction\nADHD and Addiction are like Thelma and Louise\, Bart and Homer\, or Thor and Loki. They spend a lot of time together\, but they don’t make good roommates because addiction likes to take over.\n  \nAbout The Event \n\n\n\n\nStudies estimate that 20–40% of adults with ADHD will struggle with a substance\nuse disorder at some point. Addictions can come in many forms\, like substance use\, gambling\, gaming\, and sex. In this presentation we will discuss why addictions to drugs\, alcohol and certain behaviors are so common in people with ADHD. We will talk about what makes change difficult and how people with ADHD have found ways to face\, overcome\, and even befriend their addictions.\n \nBoth ADHD and addiction can have profound impacts our emotions and our relationships. This presentation will also talk about what you can do if someone\nyou care about is struggling.\n \nDisclosure: This session will not tell you can do to fix or “cure” addiction. It will\nnot give you strategies that work for every person\, every time. It will talk about\nADHD and addiction with respect\, hope\, and with dignity.\n\nAnd it will be interactive\, imperfect and even a little bit fun! \n\nAbout our speaker: \nSean Swaby is a Canadian Certified Counsellor\, Counselling Supervisor\, and Addiction Therapist. In his practice\, he works with youth\, individuals\, and families who are navigating substance use\, addiction\, trauma\, and co-occurring mental health challenges. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at City University in Edmonton\, where he teaches the Psychology of Addictions. \nSean brings creativity into his counselling and supervision by drawing on pop\nculture\, superheroes\, and other ‘geeky’ themes that make it more engaging and\nrelatable. \nOutside of his professional life\, Sean enjoys photography\, time with his family\,\nand anything with superheroes\, zombies\, or aliens. He also volunteers with an Edmonton-based cosplay group\, suiting up as characters like Batman\, Daredevil\,\nCaptain America\, and Blade to bring some fun and inspiration to local children’s\ncharity events. \nDiagnosed with ADHD about ten years ago\, Sean is actively involved as a\nfacilitator with the Adult ADHD group. \n\n*Tickets are free on Eventbrite here; however\, we gratefully accept donations from those who are able to help. Every donation goes towards helping individuals affected by ADHD. If you would like to donate there is an option to do so on the ticket page.

SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! – Amanda Montey – Unmasking: Embracing\, ADHD\, Autism\, and Queerness
DESCRIPTION:Local Psychologist Amanda Montey will guide you in exploring masking and unmasking in this experiential discussion. – Presented along the AuDHD Support Group Meeting. \n\n\nIn this presentation\, Amanda invites you to join in on a discussion of the ways that ADHD\, autism\, and queerness contribute to experiences with masking\, and therefore\, unmasking. Amanda will discuss the ways that masking arises\, and how this informs the ways that we approach unmasking. Special attention will be paid to the ways that gender and sexuality interact with the AuDHD mask\, and this interacts with the unmasking journey. Additionally\, consideration will be paid to the role that intersectionality like race\, religion\, socioeconomic status\, and more plays in unmasking.Opportunities for self-reflection will be provided throughout\, and participants are encouraged to bring things to write and/or draw with if they would like to engage with these prompts in full.To support participants in beginning or continuing their own unmasking journeys\, Amanda will provide information on community resources\, literature\, and more. Discussion and sharing is encouraged throughout as contributes to a more rich learning experience for everyone! \n\n\n\n\nAmanda Montey (they/them) is a Registered Psychologist who works with kids\, teens\, and adults who have\, or suspect they have ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Within these populations\, Amanda works extensively with folks from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community\, often helping clients to navigate the unique circumstances presented by the ways that sexuality\, gender identity\, and neurotype can interact. Outside of work\, Amanda enjoys spending time with their spouse and their cats\, playing video games\, crocheting\, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends. Amanda is ADHD\, Autistic\, non-binary\, and queer\, and they believe in drawing from their lived experience in combination with the available research\, best practices\, and experiences of community members to help folks meaningfully understand how best to accommodate their unique needs. \n\nSpecial Guest: Ian Brown (they/them) is a queer and trans neurodivergent human living in Edmonton. Their background is in social services and high-risk youth work. They have been doing community education work on queer and trans issues and doing community resource building for over a decade. Over the past few years\, they have been working to understand and accept their autism\, and in the past year have been working on recovering from autistic burnout caused by high-risk youth work. \nFree event!
