SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! - Sean Swaby - ADHD\, Substance Use & Addiction
DESCRIPTION:ADHD\, Substance Use & Addiction\nADHD and Addiction are like Thelma and Louise\, Bart and Homer\, or Thor and Loki. They spend a lot of time together\, but they don’t make good roommates because addiction likes to take over.\n  \nAbout The Event \n\n\n\n\nStudies estimate that 20–40% of adults with ADHD will struggle with a substance\nuse disorder at some point. Addictions can come in many forms\, like substance use\, gambling\, gaming\, and sex. In this presentation we will discuss why addictions to drugs\, alcohol and certain behaviors are so common in people with ADHD. We will talk about what makes change difficult and how people with ADHD have found ways to face\, overcome\, and even befriend their addictions.\n \nBoth ADHD and addiction can have profound impacts our emotions and our relationships. This presentation will also talk about what you can do if someone\nyou care about is struggling.\n \nDisclosure: This session will not tell you can do to fix or “cure” addiction. It will\nnot give you strategies that work for every person\, every time. It will talk about\nADHD and addiction with respect\, hope\, and with dignity.\n\nAnd it will be interactive\, imperfect and even a little bit fun! \n\nAbout our speaker: \nSean Swaby is a Canadian Certified Counsellor\, Counselling Supervisor\, and Addiction Therapist. In his practice\, he works with youth\, individuals\, and families who are navigating substance use\, addiction\, trauma\, and co-occurring mental health challenges. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at City University in Edmonton\, where he teaches the Psychology of Addictions. \nSean brings creativity into his counselling and supervision by drawing on pop\nculture\, superheroes\, and other ‘geeky’ themes that make it more engaging and\nrelatable. \nOutside of his professional life\, Sean enjoys photography\, time with his family\,\nand anything with superheroes\, zombies\, or aliens. He also volunteers with an Edmonton-based cosplay group\, suiting up as characters like Batman\, Daredevil\,\nCaptain America\, and Blade to bring some fun and inspiration to local children’s\ncharity events. \nDiagnosed with ADHD about ten years ago\, Sean is actively involved as a\nfacilitator with the Adult ADHD group. \n\n*Tickets are free on Eventbrite here; however\, we gratefully accept donations from those who are able to help. Every donation goes towards helping individuals affected by ADHD. If you would like to donate there is an option to do so on the ticket page.

SUMMARY:GUEST SPEAKER! – Cheryl Becker - When Emotions Run Deep: ADHD\, Emotions\, and Rejection Sensitivity
DESCRIPTION:When Emotions Run Deep: ADHD\, Emotions\, and Rejection Sensitivity\nJoin us as we learn all about emotional regulation\, rejection sensitivity\, and the ADHD nervous system.\n  \nAbout The Event \n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation on ADHD\, emotional regulation\, and rejection sensitivity\, we will explore how the ADHD nervous system processes emotion\, threat\, and connection differently\, and why emotional responses can feel fast\, intense\, and overwhelming. \nDuring the presentation expert ADHD Psychologist Cheryl Becker will guide us in exploring:\n\nEmotional regulation as a core feature of ADHD\, not a character flaw\nRejection sensitivity and why perceived criticism\, disconnection\, or disappointment can feel so deeply painful\nThe role of the nervous system in emotional reactivity\, shutdown\, and overwhelm\nPractical\, compassionate ways to calm and regulate the nervous system\nMoving from self-criticism to self-understanding\, and from emotional survival to emotional resilience\n\n\nAbout our speaker: \nCheryl Becker has been a registered psychologist in Alberta since 1987 and has spent over 17 years specializing in adult ADHD. Cheryl has been actively involved with the ADHD Association of Greater Edmonton for several years and has contributed to several projects and community-based ADHD initiatives.\nShe is deeply interested in how each person’s brain and mind work\, believing that self-understanding\, “know thyself”\, is foundational to meaningful and lasting change. Cheryl is especially drawn to the strengths and complexities of the ADHD brain: its creativity\, insightfulness\, empathy\, and constant connection-making\, alongside the very real challenges of emotional intensity\, nervous system dysregulation\, and sensitivity to rejection. She brings warmth\, respect\, and deep appreciation for this population to her clinical work\, teaching and personal life.

– Kamala Randhawa - More Than a Hot Mess: Understanding Women & ADHD
DESCRIPTION:More Than a Hot Mess: Understanding Women & ADHD\nWomen with ADHD are often overlooked or misdiagnosed because their symptoms tend to be more internalized— This session explores ADHD in women\nthrough the interplay of nervous system regulation\, identity\, and lived experience.\n  \nAbout The Event \n\n\n\n\n\nWomen with ADHD are often overlooked or misdiagnosed because their symptoms tend to be more internalized—showing up as overwhelm\, emotional intensity\, chronic self-\ndoubt\, and the constant effort to “hold it all together.” Many are labeled as anxious\, scattered\, or inconsistent\, without recognition of the underlying neurobiology. \nHormonal fluctuations further complicate this picture\, as changes in estrogen can directly impact dopamine levels—affecting focus\, mood\, and executive functioning across the menstrual cycle\, postpartum\, and into perimenopause. This session brings a different lens: instead of focusing on productivity or trying harder\, it explores ADHD in women through the interplay of nervous system regulation\, identity\, and lived experience\, offering a more accurate and sustainable way to understand and support how women actually function. \n\nAbout our speaker: \nKamala Randhawa is an ADHD coach and international speaker known for her\ngrounded\, real-world approach to supporting women with ADHD. She has worked with\nindividuals\, parents\, educators\, and both municipal and provincial organizations to\ndeepen understanding of neurodivergence and create more supportive environments.\nBlending lived experience with a nervous-system-informed perspective\, Kamala helps women move beyond overwhelm and inconsistency toward clarity\, capacity\, and self-\ntrust. \nShe also serves on the Advisory Board for the Women’s ADHD Centre. \n\n*Tickets are free on Eventbrite here; however\, we gratefully accept donations from those who are able to help. Every donation goes towards helping individuals affected by ADHD. If you would like to donate there is an option to do so on the ticket page.
